Turning hate into love, the Indigenous Embera of Colombia .

All over city streets around Colombia you can encounter , adults, children, families, Indigenuos groups seeking out a survival pathway . Society has labeled them displaced people, however they are actually the guardians of the soul of these lands . Only now have been rendered a life on the streets , as armed groups gave no alternative to so many innocent peaceful people in Colombia.

From displacement results many other social terms, depression, alcoholism, prostitution the sad list goes on. However if there is a shimmering light within the sad tale of the Embera then maybe we can find that hope in the art they create from day to day.

I asked the Embera women about there situation and why they had to move from there land situated in Risaralda , they explained that they had been ordered many times to leave until one member of there group had been killed, at this they began to flee from there territory . Due to there situation and the seemingly hopeless response from the colombian authorities to assist the Embera they survive on the streets creating there traditional bead-work .

In the sunlight upon the Avenida Jimenez in Bogota you can find these artists weaving away ,away from the struggle the brutal hardship that has been forced upon them , not only the colours of there artwork, but also there dress, ancient culture intact , indigenous dialect , relentless determination to be .

Rather than delve deep into this tragedy more and more I can leave a link for you to click and read about this displacement but still then where would we be ? Same world , injustice ,pain all I can try to understand is possibly the celebration of there work there culture within there timeless beadwork.

Cascada has a series of pieces bought directly from the Embera to take to Europe in this Autumn , hopefully we can show them at the Native Spirit Festival which is held at S.O.A.S university holborn London.See below some examples of there creations .

If we Look up the word fair in the dictionary to find our cultural interpretation ,then maybe we could ask the weaver the equivalent word for fair in the Quechuan Language maybe there is a word , as an ethical trader searching for methods to acheieve something fair in a world so damaged by capitalism and ´el corason podrido del conquistador ´ seeing all the natural resources in this paradise invaded with blood , the concept of ´fair´seems like a real challenge , one word could be share , walking around with there wonderful 5 kids who could be destined for a,loife carrying forward even firther this fascinating culture of loom weaving or will technology finally overcome the patience and creativity and steer the next generations away from there ancestral culture ?

Capoeira angola and painting workshops with Sani Community Ecuador

Sometimes we talk and reflect about first meeting capoeira , or about the changes it has made to us as people .when Mestre Joao Grande talks about capoeira coming from within the earth he may be refering also to the point that capoeira exists within us humans in different dimensions. Practicing capoeira with teenagers from the Sani community deep in the Ecuadorian rainforest certinately affirm the understanding that this art is natural to us and manifests in many wonderful expressions in our walks of life . Arriving there the youngsters already sung Parana e , parana e , after encounters with travelling brazilians in the region , when we went through the first training sessions , the basic movements , au, meia lua greeted with delight as the youngsters grabbed the chance to try capoeira angola . We trained for two weeks almost every day , sharing movements and music . The berimbau was such a point of curiosity that i would just prepare the berimbaus for play and leave them to freely play and understand them , is this a weapon ? For hunting?
Its always incredible to be amongst the enthusiasm of capoeiristas like this such a thirst for the art-form they themselves create a new bridge for capoeira right there in the indigenous heart of South America together with Africa the grandfathers of capoeira .
Within my residency i was also sharing classes if drawing and colour painting with adults and teenagers , i always feel capoeira and visula arts go hand in hand . Toward the end of my stay there in the rainforest community we showed the artworks amongst the community and practiced mini roda’s of capoeira angola . Now the question is how to sustain this new inspiration there in the sani community, am already looking forward to the next residency there.
The sani community also runs there very own jungle lodge providing beautiful eco tourism in the heart of the rainforest , this eco-lodge is run by the community members themselves and staff from the community work within a rota , see more at www.sanilodge.com

The issues raised by its construction go beyond environmental, cultural and social impacts. The approval of a gigantic development in the hearth of the Amazon forest, The Construction of Belo Monte Dam is one of the most controversial developments ever seen in the Brazilian history. The issues raised by its construction go beyond environmental, cultural and social impacts. The approval of a gigantic development in the hearth of the Amazon forest, amongst precious indigenous nation’s territory has raised alarming concerns. The lack of studies and uncertainties towards the eminent catastrophic outcomes put an obscure perspective against Brazilian government energy generation that aims to transform the Amazon on a hydrologic dam yard.
The independent film making company Cinedelia has taken the challenge of producing with its own resources the most detail documentation ever made about the Belo Monte hydrologic dam construction.
In the last two years, Cinedelia has done 3 expeditions to the Xingu river basin, where produced over 120 hours of footage including Altamira, Brasília and São Paulo. Cinedelia has also made 87 interviews with people involved on decision making, studies, affected community and indigenous communities about the construction of Belo Monte dam.
Cinedelia’s documentation team has done exhaustive research in the controversial decision making process leading to approval of construction of Belo Monte. The vertical decision making process that excluded environmental studies, economic studies, human rights, indigenous nation’s leaders concerns and causing revolt to the Brazilian society.
Cinedelia aims to raise R$ 114 thousand reais in 30 days to finalize the film in digital format. It seems like a lot of money, but in reality it is not enough to take the film to cinema theaters. Our goal is to release the film on the Internet and make it available to the world the highlights of the documentation made on the last 2 years.
The Crowd funding is the only mechanism Cinedelia has to finalize the pos production of this precious documentary “Belo Monte – Announcement of a War”.
As an independent production this feature documentary has the commitment with the truth and aims to show the Brazilian Society and the world the facts behind the scenes of the controversial construction of Belo Monte hydrological dam.
The funds raised will be invested on the pos production of Belo Monte – Announcement of a War” allowing Cinedelia to publish the film in digital format making it available to the world in time to allow the society to see the reality ridden from the public, before it is too late to take action.
